Remove Cat Urine Odor with Natural Ingredients

Staff Writer · Sep 4, 2009

You can remove cat urine odor from your apartment with natural and inexpensive ingredients following a simple method. You probably already have everything you need to eliminate odors from cat urine in your cupboard.

Remove Cat Urine Odor Naturally

Eliminate odors from cat pee with the following tools and ingredients:

  • Paper towels
  • Hand towel or cloth
  • Scrub brush
  • Vacuum
  • Hair dryer or fan (optional)
  • Baking soda
  • Cold water
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Warm water

Blot and Rinse the Stain

As soon as your notice the cat urine stain, blot–don’t scrub–the stain carefully with paper towels. (If the stain is already dry, you can skip that step.) Cover the stain with cold water. Blot the stain again.

Use a Mixture of Vinegar and Water

You can remove cat urine odor using a natural solution of equal parts distilled white vinegar and warm water. Soak your hand towel or cloth with the vinegar and water mixture, and rub the stain in a circular motion. Repeat a second time. Allow to dry or use the hair dryer or fan to speed the process.

Use Baking Soda and a Brush

Baking soda is a natural odor-fighter and when used regularly, it can make carpets, upholstery and drapes smell fresh. Once the stained area has dried, pour a large amount of baking soda over the area until it is completely covered. Use your scrub brush to work the soda into the fibers in a circular motion.

Vacuum and Wet Vacuum if Necessary

After you have worked the baking soda into the stained area(s), you should vacuum up the baking soda, as this will help the baking soda’s odor-fighting properties work into fibers and remove the excess. If this hasn’t helped you remove cat urine odor entirely, repeat the baking soda process. If this still doesn’t work, consider using a wet vacuum with plain water or soap to thoroughly wash your carpets, drapes or upholstery.

Another Option

Because cat urine contains bacteria that is difficult to remove entirely with natural household cleaning products, you should consider purchasing a commercial cat odor remover made of entirely natural ingredients when it comes to particularly stubborn or pervasive cat urine stains. These ingredients will target the enzymes present in cat urine better than vinegar and baking soda alone.

Get to the Root of the Problem

While you work on removing the cat pee stain(s), be sure to search for the root of your cat’s problem. Your cat may be peeing outside of its litter due to a dirty litter box, stress, being unfixed or another underlying medical problem. If cleaning the litter box does not solve the problem, bring your cat to the vet for an examination.

Using natural ingredients to remove cat urine odor can be just as or nearly as effective as using a commercial odor eliminating product. Catching a stain shortly after your cat has urinated increases your chances of success. If you have to resort to a commercial cleanser, there are a number of all-natural options that will help you get your apartment smelling fresh again.
