My Beautiful Boudoir

shutterstock_62419639Bedrooms are funny rooms. Some people put a lot of emphasis into creating a quiet peaceful space in which to retire each evening. Others toss in a bed and call the room complete. If you fall into the former category we have some suggestions on how to decorate your bedroom to design a room full of sweet dreams.

No matter your decorating style in the rest of the apartment, you can go wild in the bedroom. This is your own personal space, one not many visitors to your home will see. Infuse it with yourself, and even feel free to experiment a bit. But not too much, as you don’t want to forget the room’s primary purpose should be to sleep.

With that in mind, go for calming colors – whites, ivories, greys, etc. If you need something deeper, a navy blue will still invoke tranquility. This idea goes for wood elements as well, choose a lighter, honey colored wood for your furniture. If you are itching to go with florals or something geometric, here’s not the place to mix prints. Pick one and repeat it on the bed and in the curtains. If you have a small seating area, use the pattern on some pillows or cushions. Florals are the big bedroom trend for 2014, so if this appeals to you now is the time to go for it. Ethnic prints are also popular and are great if you’d like to add a spot of color to the room.

Another tip for a serene space is the idea of cocooning. Use lots of fabrics and upholstery in your bedroom; consider a fabric covered headboard, or maybe even a wall. Don’t forget a warm and fluffy area rug. The bedroom is also the place for ‘closed’ furnishings, meaning dressers and wardrobes with drawers and doors you can close to hide the clutter. When it’s time to retreat, you don’t want to be reminded of the piles lurking in the corners. To assist in this aspect, you can also choose minimalist furniture with clean lines that give a soothing impression.

You also want your bedroom to have a bit of life so to speak, so consider some natural elements like a plant for a dresser top or even the floor. Lighting is also very important – one glaring overhead light isn’t the most appropriate so consider a pair of nightstand lamps as well as at least one floor lamp to create soft moods. Strategically placed, and cleverly used is the idea behind getting the proper lighting moods at the proper time.

The signature piece of furniture in the bedroom is obviously the bed. If this is important to you – go big, no matter the size of your room. If it’s a stellar piece, it serves as the room’s defining design element and you won’t need to save floor space for anything else. You can consider the walls however, and this is another place to add a restful hint. Find a piece of art, photo or some other decorative wall element that screams at you to relax. Maybe a country landscape, or waves crashing on a beach.

The bedroom is the first room you see every morning and the last space you recall before dropping off to sleep, so make both impressions memorable!
