Large Communities vs. Small Communities

Staff Writer · Jul 7, 2011

Choosing one of the large communities or to live in a small apartment community depends on your lifestyle and the amenities you desire. Both communities have benefits and drawbacks, and the community that is right for you is the one that meets a majority of your needs.

Large Community Benefits

Most large communities are run by management corporations, making response times to maintenance requests shorter. Additionally, the size of large communities means that there is little demand for a particular unit, which leads to lower rents. Finally, larger communities often have more amenities and are more welcoming to pets.

Large Community Drawbacks

The sheer size of larger apartment communities often means that they are louder; more residents, after all, means that there are more individuals to make noise. Their large population often means more turnovers in occupancy, meaning more damage to apartments.

Small Community Benefits

Small communities feel homey because of the closeness between neighbors. In these communities it is not uncommon for neighbors to become friends. However, that closeness might backfire and result in your neighbors knowing everything about your life. Additionally, privately owned apartments may be better maintained because, to the owner, they are an investment.

Small Community Drawbacks

Small apartment communities are usually managed by private owners or small management groups may make repair times longer. Apartments in small communities, especially privately owned ones, may not have upgraded appliances or be in good shape mainly because of the costs associated with doing so. Small communities also often offer few or no amenities.
