Interior Design Basics: How to Use Decorative Pillows

Staff Writer · Sep 30, 2010

When you’re just starting out in your new place, use decorative pillows when you don’t have a lot of money to decorate. Pillows provide an inexpensive way to bring life into your home. They can be used all throughout your apartment to add color and charm to your bedroom, living room, and dining room. Just by adding these pillows you can add a splash of color to any room for the fraction of the cost of paint. You have the option of purchasing your pillows or making them yourself.

Living Room

Wake up your living room furniture with a few of these added additions. Coordinate the color of your carpet and furniture when selecting your pillows. If your carpet is green and your furniture is blue choose pillows that feature these two colors along with other eye popping colors. By doing so you create a focus point when people enter your living room. You can also coordinate the dining room chairs with matching pillows. The dining chair pillows will be a different shape, but can also be of the same pattern of the fabric that you’ve chosen for your living room.

Kitchen

A kitchen with a window seat can be brought back to life by adding these little gems. Decorative throw pillows also add an inviting Japanese appeal in the place of furniture. These extra-large pillows can be used as added seating in your living room area as well. Pillows thrown in front of the fireplace create an invitation for comfort and relaxation. Make a bay window more inviting or create a reading nook with the use of throw pillows.

Make Your Own

Make your own decorative pillows and save money and ensure that you get exactly what you want. Expert sewing skills are not required for making your own pillows. You can even make them by hand if you don’t have a sewing machine. If you’re not handy in the sewing area, or you just don’t feel like making your own, you can still save money by paying to have your pillows made. Maybe one of your friends is sewing savvy and—for a free meal—will sew your pillows.

If you’re ready to make your own decorative pillows all you need is to choose the fabric and the insides of the pillows. The best part about making your own pillows is choosing the fabric. Be careful because you could spend hours and hours just looking at all the different fabric to choose. The choice of fabrics is endless, but it is important to decide the types of fabric that you want your pillows made from. Interesting pillows can be made from silk or different brocade fabric—you can even add tassels and trims.

You can also seek out patterns for making pillows. Many of these patterns, come with pieces for different shaped pillows, which saves you from having to buy several patterns. It also provides the suggested types of fabric to use and the amount needed so you don’t have to do the guess work. Working with the pattern will ensure a better outcome for your decorative pillows.
