Going somewhere fabulous this summer? Use it as an excuse to perk up your living space. Acquiring special items from your travels will not only personalize your décor, they’ll act as happy memories to sustain you when the next vacation feels too far away. And actually, you don’t need an exotic destination; simply exploring a new city could inspire you to decorating greatness.

Pre-trip, take a look around your apartment and think about what’s missing. Bare shelves and walls can quickly be enlivened with some art from your holiday. A pencil drawing of the city by a local artist, a print from a young contemporary one; pieces like these are not only unique; they’ll offer happy holiday reminders every time you see them. If you are on a budget or don’t need anything big, pick up some postcards. These can be framed and hung in any room of your house; perfect for those blank annoying spaces where nothing else fits. Maps can be used in the same way. If you are crafty, keep all your ticket stubs, receipts and other interesting paper bits and bods and make a small (or large) collage out of them. Adding in postcards, maps and your own pictures will give it a truly you look. Don’t forget your camera. Take lots of pics of the beautiful, the interesting, the odd that you discover. These can be framed small for shelves, framed big for walls, or used to create a gallery wall.

What’s your holiday destination known for? If there’s a local arts and crafts scene, be sure to visit artisan shops to see what the locals are producing. What about design? Finding a whimsical piece for the bathroom or kitchen is always exciting. In your pre-trip apartment evaluation, think about what you’d love to change. Ugly chair, dull colors? Look for fabrics (tea towels, handmade lace, embroidered cloth and the like) that can simply and lightly be stuck in a suitcase to remerge as a new chair or pillow covers or curtains when you get home. If you are a shopper, simply keeping your eyes open and your mind tuned into design will reveal surprising décor items you’d never have thought of.

If you have a collection, of course your travels are the perfect opportunity to add to it. When you bring home that new piece, also maybe use it as an opportunity to freshen up how you display your collection. Plopped on a shelf? Scattered about the apartment? Think about your space and collection seriously and get to work displaying it properly. Some simple relocating will give a fresh look to your room.

Vacations are a time to relax, recharge and just have a little bit of fun away from the everyday grind. They can also be great sources of design inspiration as you explore new streets, check out different restaurants and discover a fresh lifestyle.
