How to Kill Cockroaches

Monday, September 11, 2006

You’ve probably seen cockroaches before, but were likely too concerned with screaming, running away, and finding a can of Raid to notice much about the bug. There are many, many different types of cockroaches, and every variety has its own unique set of characteristics and habits. It’s definitely possible that your area is inhabited by a number of cockroach species, so you’ll probably need to use a combination of pest control methods to battle all the different cockroaches that want to share your home.

In general, cockroaches are an incredibly hardy group of insects, which is why it’s so hard to kill them. They’ve evolved over millions of years to become resistant to as many threats as possible, and because they reproduce extremely quickly, different species can sometimes develop resistance to specific pesticides.

Most types of cockroaches can survive a month without water and two to three months without food, which makes it difficult to get rid of the bugs simply by depriving them of nourishment. And if you’ve ever heard that cockroaches can survive for long stretches of time without their heads, you heard right. Because cockroaches don’t breathe through their mouths but rather through openings (called “spiracles”) all over their bodies, the head is not crucial for the roach to survive for a few days; it’s only necessary to allow the roach to drink water or eat food.

Here are some tips on eliminating those crafty cockroaches from your apartment, and preventing the bugs from coming back.

Eliminating roaches with ease (okay, maybe not too much ease…)

If you see roaches in your apartment on a semi-regular basis, you’ll probably want to enlist a professional, or ask your landlord about getting your apartment professionally treated. This is probably the best—and possibly the only—way to eliminate any significant roach population in your apartment. Your do-it-yourself treatment options include the following, in rough order of increasing toxicity. Homes involving pets or small children will probably want to keep to the first few, less toxic, options.

Live traps

Live traps work by attracting the cockroach to the trap with some form of bait. You can purchase live traps or make your own using a bowl with steep sides. Put petroleum jelly on the inner walls of the container so the cockroach can’t climb back out, and then put food and damp paper toweling at the bottom of the container. Make a paper ramp leading into the container so the cockroach climbs in due to the food but is unable to escape due to the petroleum jelly barrier. After trapping roaches, you can flush them down your toilet for sanitary disposal. If your homemade trap isn’t working, consider purchasing one. Traps have the added advantage of letting you discover where the roaches are congregating in your home—the traps with more bodies are in the more populated areas, which may need additional treatment.

Boric acid

Boric acid, used as an insecticide in powder form, works by abrading the cockroach’s cuticle, or shell, with its harsh particles. When its shell is damaged, the insect will dry out and ultimately die of dehydration. This is an effective method, but may be less useful in highly humid environments where it will take the cockroach longer to lose its moisture. Some people recommend making a paste by mixing boric acid powder, flour or sugar, and water; the starches make the mix more food-like and thus more attractive to the roach.

Bait stations

Many companies offer bait stations, which are similar to live traps but work by incorporating a deadly mold in the bait. This mold is harmful only to cockroaches and related insects and should not be damaging to humans or pets. Other traps may incorporate pheromones to attract the cockroach into the trap to ingest the mold or another type of poison. Stations usually provide an enclosed environment that is attractive to the cockroach, which prefers dark, tight spaces.

Sprays

Sprays can be classified by the type of insecticide they use. Common chemicals used to kill cockroaches include permethrin, imiprothrin, and cypermethrin. Some sprays are liquid, and others are powder; the powders tend to be both more toxic and more lasting, as well as capable of covering a larger area.

TIP: Don’t spray and use bait stations or traps simultaneously. The sprays will make the bait less attractive to the roach and eliminate its enticing powers. Bait stations can be better for bigger infestations, so start with stations and spray for regular upkeep once the roach population has been reduced.

Gels

Gels or “sticky traps” are strips of gel or other sticky substances, designed to catch cockroaches on their way in or out of your home. The roaches will be unable to escape from the stickiness. In addition to helping get rid of roaches, these sticky strips can also help you identify where roaches live and move in your home, so you can treat highly populated areas more aggressively.

NOTE: Cockroaches prefer to walk so that the sides or tops of their bodies are touching another object, like a wall or the bottom of a piece of furniture. (This trait is called thigmotaxis or stereotaxis.) Keep this in mind and place your sticky traps next to walls or under or next to low furniture items or cabinetry.

Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs)

While most insecticides attack the cockroach’s nervous system, IGRs work to sterilize immature cockroaches so they will not be able to reproduce as adults. Adding IGRs to your treatment plan helps ensure that both the current and future cockroach populations will be eliminated. Since fast reproduction is a major reason roach populations become and stay so large, eliminating this factor is a big boon in roach control.

By using a combination of these methods, you can eliminate the vast majority of any cockroach population from your home. Once you’ve significantly reduced the number of critters around your apartment, your next step is preventing these pesky buggers from returning.

When I was a child staying with my grandparents, I discovered that the big roaches can fly at night. I remember hearing the buzzing sound as soon as I turned off the lights. I was in bed already so I had to sleep with the lights on and even then I was afraid of them, especially going to the bathroom at night because they roaches in the bathroom all the time. Nothing really worked well getting rid of them but when I was able to live on my own I always had a cat and never saw roaches. Maybe she ate them all?

Also, my neighbor told me that when she stayed with her sister for a few days, she wanted to sleep on the floor in the living room because her daughter was sleeping on the couch and she likes sleeping on hard surfaces. Well, next day she claimed that a roach eat a part of her ear lobe, even showed it to people and said that she had to fight a roach trying to get inside her ear. I haven't seen a roach in years but I always try to live in brand new buildings. It seems like the old housing units are the ones that the roaches prefer. I don't know. I am praying that I don't have to see those disgusting little creeps ever again in my life.

IF you see one there are most possibly millions, and getting rid of them which i am still in the process, is an ongoing battle, you can't stop, if you think they are gone and stop using insecticides they WILL come back, it can take YEARS to get rid of them so DONT stop using your boric acids and etc. DO NOT leave sinks wet wipe them up with a cloth EERYTIME you run water, throw away all food, use a garbage can with a lid that first VERY tightly. Vacume your floor EVERYDAY leave nod dirt or food particles ever, seal all cracks with caulking, use boric acid in your toulet water EVERYTIME after you fluch and put the lid down and shit your bathroom door if you have pets so they dont get at the water and die, clean ALL the time a clean house is paramount, dont have ANTY cardboard boxes or ANY paper bags they love them. Once you sae even ONE roach constant killing is necessary and MAYBE oneday they will be gone.(??)

We recently purchased a fairly nice house.... I have never seen a roach in my life until we moved here... So I went to Lowe's bought a big jug of perimeter spray sprayed the around the house and inside the house, well suppose to be good for a few months, but seems like I have to spray every week. Well just when I thought I had it all under control, I went to get food for my dogs out of the bag which was in the laundry room, I started filling up each of the dishes, when I was at the last dish, this big roach crawled out and onto my hands, talk about freakin out, Yuk, I had to throw a towel on him cause he was fast, then I stomped him...... so next day, time to clean house.... got the perimeter spray again, vacummed, did the works, got to the bathroom, thought You know them shower doors are alittle yukky, I think I'll take them right out and scrub them down, well I got the first door almost out when I noticed the friggen tenticles or whatever they are, this was a grandfather roach I'm sure, I banged the door so he fell off and I squashed him onto the bathroom mat, god they're gross.... so out comes the bleach, everywhere, I poured it in all the drains, I don't know where they're coming from, maybe the vents..... the house smelt like Chlorine..... so we'll see.... I mean they HIDE Everywhere

Friday night of Labor Day

#82508 On Friday, September 12, 2008 Guest (not verified) said,

Friday night of Labor Day weekend, I come home from a night out with friends and sit down to relax in my living room. My little dog wanted a treat so I went into the kitchen to get her a bone from the cubbard. I open the cubbard & there are zillions of baby roaches crawling on the shelves, in her dog biscuits, on canned food, boxed ceral, oh my god was it disgusting. I am normally the type to recyle, but in a moment like this I just threw everything in the cabinet out into 2 huge garbage bags. I cleaned out the cabinets with Clorox. At this point I cant sleep, I'm itchy and I'm freaking out. I notice there are more babies by the dogs dish, they where climbing on my counter too, inside my cabinets where my dishes where. EWWW! Total freak out.
I research online what to do after I cloroxed everything so thoroughly the skin literally peeled off my fingers. I used the boric acid in all the corners then called an exterminator. Ofcourse it was Labor Day weekend so noone was working. Fan----ingtastic! I begged one exterminator to sell me the spray so I could do it myself. He mustve pitied me because I'm a real girly girl with the fake nails and highlights in my hair and he knew I would probably commit suicide if I didn't get my apartment treated for bugs immediately. I ended up spraying the perimeters of every room and using the boric acid in my closets and other hard to reach places. I swiffered, vaccuumed, cleaned all my linens, slip covers, threw out phone books, shoeboxes and other shit I dont need. I also poured clorox down all of my drains, sinks, showers, and the toilet too. I found a few stragglers in my bedrooms before I sprayed I stepped on them and so far I haven't seen anything.
Being a typically neat and clean person this is a really bad experience for me. I been obsessively researching online what works best to kill these fuckers. I'm going to buy Diatomaceous Earth, you can find it on Amazon, it's nontoxic and is supposed to be dam good. It's safe to use around pets so I figure I'll dust my floors (I got hardwood throughout my apt.) so the little fuckers cant squeeze through the floor boards. Since I did my massive treatment my neighbor upstairs has been seeing them. I think they peaced out of my apt. and went over to her crib because it's not toxic and probably got some good food. I also found out the following products work well Cypermethrin (it is not available in NY, which I happen to live in so I'm sending it to a friends house in NJ), Drione, Orthene, Maxforce, Avert & Advance work well according to most of the sites I have read. Also get some clear caulk and do any tiny crack & crevice these bastards could be coming out of. I have always sceeved bugs and this is a nightmare to me, I told my landlord he needs an exterminator but I'm doing my part inorder to help prevent infestation. OMG that word is so gross. Good Luck my fellow Terminators. Hopefully the roaches wont be back.

I am so glad to hear that

#82683 On Friday, September 19, 2008 Guest (not verified) said,

I am so glad to hear that story! I, too, am a neat-freak girly girl who recently moved into an apartment and started seeing roaches within a week (I saw a few in the bathroom and somehow the assholes got into my dresser drawers near my clothes). I thought I was going faint. I did the same thing and bleached the entire place up and down, swept, vaccumed, cleaned behind all the appliances (at about midnight mind you) and bought traps, baits, and sprays of all varieties and today, I'm getting Boric Acid. I'm sooo happy to hear that there are other products I can get to help get rid of them. One roach is one too many for me to feel comfortable. I also hear that if you get a cat, it'll kill the roaches, too. Oh, I also cried a little as I bought the roach killing products and lamented that I ever moved into this place. Sounds retarded since roaches are so common, but it makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks!

I moved into the house I live in about 3 1/2years ago and when we moved in I noticed some dead roaches under the sink and you can tell the people who lived here before me had a problem with them, because there was some brown sticky stuff on some corners in my kitchen cupboards, my husband said that is stuff to kill roaches, I was worried but I didn't have a problem with roached until now, they have been popping up everywhere, I don't know if it's because it's summer time or what, but I have tried some chinese chalk...it might be boric acid, don't know, I also tried boric acid powder, we even fogged the house, and had to leave for a couple hrs. and wash everything afterward and nothing, it seems like there's more! I had boxed my dishes to spray in the cupboards and the tape I used to seal them up had some roaches stuck to them. so my husband and I had an idea to put some tape sticky side up to see if we would catch some and it works there were lots of those suckers stuck to it. so basically every night I lay tape out and see if there is some stuck to it. It's a pain in the butt to do every night but it works better than the boric acid powder, that stuff killed a couple but brought out more it seems. it sucks cause I don't know how long I am going to have to do this. My sister was putting the acid on a cabinet and looked up and there was giant fucking roach waving his antennae saying "what's up?" from a ventilation hole near the sink. He was the Marlon Brando of roaches. But not hot Marlon Brando in "A Streetcar named Desire," but twisted scary fuck Marlon Brando in "Heart of Darkness." Anyway, after emptying the kitchen there was a lone roach in the cabinet. It was Marlon. He was COVERED in boric acid. He is one tough son of bitch. We squashed him.

So we got into the new apartment, it looked clean..but within the first night cockroches were everywhere! To add to that, fleas! It's grossing me out, I told him right away what we had discovered. They "bombed" the place...which was alot of hassel (and I just started back at school this same week..I don't have the time or energy for this extra stress!) that sure didn't kill them and he hasn't gotten back to me about it.
Anyone know what I should do? Can I by law make them replace the carpet? I've heard it's near impossible to get the bugs out once they've nested in it.

#82261 On Wednesday, September 03, 2008 Guest (not verified) said,

Some states require LLs to exterminate mice, rats, roaches, bedbugs, ants, and termites at the LLs expense. If there is a bomb that must be used to exterminate, you may have to leave your apt for a few days. During this time the LL has to mitigate rent, but does not have to find and pay for a place for you.
Also, do not stop paying rent. If you do, you may be evicted and failure to pay rent is not an excuse even if there is a pest problem (unless the place is literally impossible to live, in extreme circumstances). Failure to pay is basically an automatic win for a LL.
My advice is to contact your LL and let him know about the problem; give reasonable time to cure the problem (probably a week); and if he doesn't cure the pest problem, contact the Clerk of Courts and put your rent money in escrow through the court and let your LL know thats where the $ is.
Good luck

We live in military housing

#82187 On Monday, September 01, 2008 Guest (not verified) said,

We live in military housing in the swamps of North Carolina and let me tell you, the roaches are beyond horrible. Imagine your entire house being a hive. No lie. When they moved my new fridge in (because the old one got fried because of..you guessed it! ROACHES) the guy pushing it in on a dolly misjudged how hard to push and the fridge put a hole in the wall. He screamed like a little girl when dozens and dozens of the little bastards came POURING out of the hole. He looked at me like he was going to cry and said "You have roaches!!" ..well no shit Sherlock! Nothing is safe in our quarters unless it is sealed in a bag. We keep our clothes in those giant ziplock bags, all of our food that doesnt need to be refrigerated is in baggies, our silverware too. We also keep our plates and glasses in them along with our cookware. (the giant sized)
Luckily they're tearing this place down. They tore down the one across the street from me and I watched from my kitchen window. You could see them running all around. No lie. Moving out into a new place is going to take me 3 times as long because I'm going to have to be so careful to check each and every item for bugs. We wont be using cardboard boxes because the military provides them and they always always ALWAYS have roaches in the cardboard itself.
I'm so tempted to just leave our furniture and start over. I can't imagine a way to make SURE we don't bring them with us when we move.

HELP!! We live in a "luxury"

#82178 On Sunday, August 31, 2008 Guest (not verified) said,

HELP!! We live in a "luxury" apartment and pay huge rent for the darn stupid thing. Across from us a lady and her son just moved in a few weeks ago. She has informed us that she has cockroaches!!! I'm thinking she moved them in with her. I am so afraid that those little bastards are going to take over every apartment. We are not having any problems as of yet but I'm concerned that the critters are going to start migrating into the other 7 apartments in our building. I'm considering hiring my own pest control person instead of relying on the complex. This place is huge, 300 units and I don't think the company is really concerned or cares about our building, just making the money. How do we keep them out?! Has anyone had success with keeping them out?!? I can NOT live with those gross bugs!

Thank you in advance with any advise.

We live in a mobile home

We live in a mobile home deep in the woods. A friend of my daughter's came for a visit about 6 months ago, and my daughter saw a roach crawl out of her bookbag. Now they are EVERYWHERE!
I tried some industrial, don't use indoors, must be lisenced to posess powder mixed in a pump up sprayer. It killed the little bastards wholesale. I danced among their squirming bodies. Now the spray doesn't work anymore.
Roaches are a sign of filthiness. We are not filthy people. It has been good to read of everyone else's experiences. Kinda like a support group.
Today I'm starting a total roach destruction program. Borax, roach traps, industrial spray. I will fight them in the kitchen. I will fight them in the bathroom. I will fight them in the yard. We will defend our island, whatever the cost.

I am staying in China to cover someones holiday while they go back to the UK and I am staying in his apartment by myself. Before he left I said "You dont get insects do you?!" My worst fear!!! He said no, and I forgot all about it.....until last nite. Was going to the kitchen and this THING just appeared, I almost died! It scuttled into the kitchen into a corner and I grabbed the first thing I could see-floor polish and blasted it. Then I trapped it under a colander, but I tried to drag it over to the corner of the room but it got out and dived under the fridge nooooooooooooooo. Now i cant find it I tried to coax it out armed with a sweeper and a hoover but no luck. Horrific now I feel like theres insects crawling over me and am super paranoid my eyes darting around the place!!! Spent the nite cowering under the duvet, if my foot crept out was like no get back under the duvet!! Have not entered the kitchen since last nite, and am dreading it. Needed my boyfriend there! Have 7 days left til I leave and cant wait now. Hope there arent any more lurking around blleeeeuuuurggh they make me wanna vom!!!

My new attack on the vicious

#81970 On Monday, August 25, 2008 Guest (not verified) said,

My new attack on the vicious war on roaches at my house seems to be working... slowly... but it is working...

I bought a small vaccuum (just for this purpose), it is a bagless one, you know, like the ones with the cup thingy you can empty. I put a tad of borax in the cup, hook up the hose to it, with the crevice tool.

I set out my traps (A few slivers of fresly grated carrots). Of course the carrots are in tiny pieces, perfect for being sucked through the vaccuum. Then I wait.

I suffer from insomnia already, so this method doesnt bother me.

I just wait a few hours (or until what ever Im watching on tv is over), go into the kitchen (where mine are),

Flip on the light, and go postal on them.... sucking the little buggers up in the vaccuum, through the hose. When Im done,.... and see no more, I cover the top of the hose with a heavy duty plastic bag and rubber band it in place (no escapees)

And that is something I do several times a night.

We also have bait traps, and have sprayed around our house. Our next is going to be borax around the paremiter of our yard, and inside along all the walls and cabinets. I cant stand roaches. They are so incredibly gross.

We never had roaches until our new neighbors moved in. Now its a problem. And I dont even live in a apartment.

I live in a mobile home park.

Man... wish they would just completely go away. Its just nice to know that I am not the only one who is obsessing over this.

I feel like I'm in a club now! My husband and I just moved to GA and into basically a cockroach infested home. We have our dishes in the fridge and our silverware in tupperware. Also for the first few weeks we were sleeping with the lights on. LOL. It's marvelous. We have had the exterminators out here twice so far. Well we're working on the "Las Vegas traps" right now, have done the boric acid and such. It's a major pain in the ass!! Thanks for all the laughs guys! lol.

Seiously, I killed 14 last night. No joke. We moved into a tiny duplex right near the beach in long beach, CA. Coming from a place where there aren't many cockroaches we just thought they were weird bugs from outside. My boyfriend and I saw the first couple in the first month of living here... Then it started. They hide everywhere. I slept on the couch that I pulled out from the wall last night. We had an exterminater come in last week and it doesn't look like it had done anything. I don't want to stay up crying anymore...

I have lived in my apartments for a year, which I keep in pristine condition. I saw one last week in the lobby and now one is in my kitchen under a salad bowl. I have been up all night and I don't think I will be eating tomorrow. It has to be my neighbors. At first I chalked it up to the extreme heat, but now I am beginning to think that one of them is keeping a dirty place.

OK,OK! I myself am a neat freak. A cleaning fannatic if you will! I found my first roach tonite, after 4 peaceful years of living in my house. It's the first one, so i had to research it. I freaking skeeve roaches!! So the one I found here in my kitchen running underneath my fridge was a oriental roach. My cat was chasing it, thats how I took notice to it. If i found one does it mean there are more? i havent' seen any more yet... i surfed roach web sites and they tell me to walk around w/ a flashlight to see if I can catch one scurrying. i don't know that i have anymore. is it possible than one just came into the house? O squished it and sprayed it. I'm afraid to sleep now.

I came into my spotless kitchen last night and the little bastards were playing cards and having a concert throughout the entire room. This morning I emptied cabinets, moved the fridge, stove and microwave and saturated it with RAID! Now I'm seeing the bastards crawling onto the clean floor area choking and squirming...hee hee. I did tell the landlord he'd better get an exterminator out here this week and spray under the bldg. I've swept up at least 100 so far and they I keep seeing more deaths as the morning progresses. ;)
I've poured bleach down the drains to make sure they aren't living in there. I opened the microwave and there was one sitting there...I almost tested to see if they can really survive a microwave...hmmm but I opted for the blast of Lemon Scented RAID. He instantly died...I found his little bastard family too...DEATH TO ALL OF THESE NASTY CREATURES. GRRRRRRRR! I'm going to try that Chinese Chalk too. Thanks for letting me rant. My skin is crawling!
