A mouse or mice came into our house about 2 weeks ago and have not left.

We usually get these nuisances about once every 5 yrs.

We bought a cat about 3 yrs ago. Stupid thing won't even do anything, but it appears the Mice are steering clear of fluffy as they seem to be taking refuge within the ceiling tiles of our basement.

We have put one dish of poison last week thinking there was only one, but now, there's sure to be more as we checked the dish and saw the poison turned to dust and a bunch of mouse poop.

Now we have about 6 dishes full of food and hope that this will get rid of the suckers once and for all.

From what I read it will take about 10 days to get rid of them.

So for those who think kitty is going to solve the problem? Guess again. Mice are a lot smarter than you think. They won't go near the Mouser unless they run into the wrong spot and get cornered by him.

Actually I hope my cat doesn't get him. If the mouse if full of poison in his system, then kitty can die from eating it.

I sympathize with everyone on this board. This is always a horrible situation. My family even jokes that we can wait for the summer when they go away.

Time to call someone to check the holes and cracks in our home.

I moved in to my apartment in early september (college offcampus housing...).
I guess it's too cold for these buggers outside, so I'm seeing them now in my home.
One of them came into my room last night, not once, but twice... it looked me straight in the eye and just walked right on out.
It's kind of disgusting that I spotted the mouse right near my fridge.
I'm a 22yr old male and I'm so afraid of these things; never knew I'd be so afraid of such little rodents lol

Thank you everyone for all these stories... I'm def. going to try to get rid of this.
First thing Ill try is sticky traps.
If they don't work, then I'm going to try peppermint oil, followed by calling the exterminator.

Thanks everybody for posting your stories. By reading through them, I was able to get some information for a starting point to try and rid myself of these uninvited guests who aren't paying rent to live here!

Question: Anybody who has cats have any reaction with the peppermint oil? I've read its toxic to them, even to inhale. Also, any issues with disease from deer mice? That's what I figured out I have and I know they carry hantavirus. Before I realized I had mice, I went through a pile of neglected mail that had been urinated on and touched a lot of paper with my bare hands. Now I'm using gloves and a safety mask.

About a week and a half ago when the weather turned cool, I started hearing scratching sounds in the ceiling. At first I thought it was birds because I've heard birds in the vent before now. Well, I came home this weekend during the DAY and caught two of them running around in the kitchen. I've never had mice before, so I was totally fried by this! Terrified too. I began decluttering and called an exterminator who wanted almost 250 to come out to do a consultation, lay traps and identify access points. Then they wanted more money to plug the holes and even more money to come back and check the traps dispose of them. I figured for that amount, I might as well do it myself! I bought some of those fancy sonic things. A mouse walked right by it. The only creature it bothered was me! Secondly, I bought some of those humane things where you bait it with peanut butter and the thing closes behind them and points to a red arrow saying there's a mouse inside. Last night I witnessed a mouse push it aside and keep going! I had been avoiding sticky traps because I didn't want to touch it. I also bought some peppermint oil and soaked some cotton balls with it and put it over the vents and turned the heat on. Two days of humane traps and nothing, 20 minutes of sticky traps and it caught my very first mouse! It was still alive though. I hadn't thought far enough ahead of how to dispose of it and I didn't want to touch it, so after seeing it nearly pull itself off the trap (it went on crookedly) I panicked and ran to the kitchen for a soup can in the trash, came back and stuck another glue trap under it and stuck the soup can on top of it making a trap. I put it in a bag and put that bag in another bag and put that bag in the trash and put a big ass rock over the lid! Now I have to figure out how many more there are. Next stop, CATVILLE!

So, does anyone have any advice for cats mixing with peppermint oil, please? Before this all started, I had already started the adoption process and don't want to stop or forfeit my money now because I've laid out peppermint balls and don't want to hurt the kitty.

BTW--Anyone having trouble finding 100 percent peppermint oil with no GNC nearby might try a craft store or one of those alternative healing stores with the crystals and i-Ching things. That's where I got mine. And it smells nifty.

I am terrified of a mouse I've seen twice now in my house. Just rented it in march and didn't see this thing until first week in october....cold weather perhaps. anyway I purchased two mouse traps and no luck they eat the peanut butter and that's it....then I purchased decon drops and no site of dead mice yet; the mouse moved the piece of decon somewhere because I set the piece of decon next to the trap and it is no longer there. I haven't seen the mouse in a while until last night I saw it running from behind my couch into my room...I'm trying the traps today where the mouse goes in and you can't see it. any Ideas I'm 33 and deathly afraid of this mouse issue....thanks

I tried the peppermint oil thing - did not work at all! Tried everything in my old house - but the poison was the only thing that worked. (The poison had formaldehyde in it - so it dries up the little mouse bodies, so they don't smell) So if you don't have pets/children, go for the poison! I used to think it was cruel to try to kill the little buggers, but the scratching in the walls was keeping me up at night! Now I'm in a studio apartment, and saw my first mouse....ugh!

I have had a lot of success with peppermint oil. We live in a house that was built in the 1700s. The foundation is all old brick and open. It is useless to even try to stop them from coming in. Last spring one of my kids left a banana in the living room and we had a huge mouse activity explosion in our living areas. I went crazy. I was finding droppings EVERYWHERE. So I started with the peppermint oil. After a lot of trial and error, I have found a system that works. Every night I squirt a long thin stream of peppermint oil parallel to the thresholds of every doorway in the living areas (we have pine wood polyurethaned floors). That way, the mice will have to run through the oil to get into the next room. If you have ever gotten peppermint oil on your skin/mucous membranes you will know it burns. My theory as to why this works is that the mice get the oil on their skin and it makes them very uncomfortable. We have not seen a mouse or droppings in months. We have lived in this house for 7 years and this is the only thing that has worked 100%. I buy peppermint oil now in the 16 oz size and use droppers to stream it on the floor. Every morning I wipe up the residue, although most of the oil evaporates during the night. It is very strong smelling, and I think that the scent alone repells them at this point. This system works but it requires vigilance. This may cause problems on floors for some people, I don't know. We still hear them in the walls but not as much. The strong scent at night is worth not having the mice around! Good luck to everyone, I know this is a terrible situation to live in.

I moved into a bedsitter apartment in a converted old [and quite run down] Victorian house in May. Three days after I moved in i was sitting on the bed and a mouse ran out from underneath - gave me quite a fright. that was the last I saw of it until about 10 days ago when I ordered pizza, intending to have the left over garlic bread with my soup for lunch the next day.

The next morning I went into my kitchen and found the box for the garlic bread had been nibbled - and so had the contents inside, only a very little missing from the bread but of course it all went in the bin.

Last weekend was my birthday and I had a friend to stay, the first night we had pizza and garlic bread - that night I heard noise in the kitchen and looked in the garlic bread box and found a mouse - I quickly taped up the holes and was going to take it outside and release it but stupidly decided to take a photo to show my friend.. d'oh! Well of course as soon as I opened the box the little bugger jumped out, I'm mobility impaired so didn't have a chance of catching it.

The next night, I heard the mouse run up my guitar [quite eerie actually] I was being a good host so gave my guest the bed.. but sleeping on the floor when you KNOW there is a mouse six inches from your nose is quite freaky!

I looked through a pile of seldom used bags tonight and found a bar of 70% dark chocolate that I had obviously forgotten about but that was now almost totally mouse eaten. I went out today and bought a bottle of Tisserrand pure peppermint oil from the pharmacy, was €6.50 and I cut up round cotton cosmetics pads into quarters, applied oil and put every couple of feet around both my bedsit and my kitchen, used almost the entire bottle, so much so that I got a bit dizzy. I thought for sure that if it was affecting me it would be certain to scare away the mouse - yet as I sit here in bed at half past two am typing this to you - I CAN STILL HEAR THE LITTLE BUGGER RUNNING AROUND MY ROOM. Grrrrrrr.

If I am feeling well enough I shall try going out tomorrow and buying more peppermint oil. Should it work quickly or does it take some time? Until recently I was vegan so just can't bring myself to put down traps, if the peppermint doesn't work I guess I'll be ordering more garlic bread and trying to catch it for release outside.

I think that the effectiveness of the peppermint oil may depend on the type of mouse that it is. We have these small grey house mice. When we first tried peppermint oil, we soaked cotton and then put them in those paper cupcake wrappers. Which seemed to do the job. (This was around last year).

4 days ago, we discovered their "presents" in the kitchen, so i tried something different. We took everything off the counters, cleaned them and before putting everything back in it's place, i "polished" the counters down with the peppermint oil, then put the paper towel i used to "polish" in the pantry. Admittedly it was a bit strong and my husband even remarked that you can kind of feel it on your eyes, but we've checked the kitchen every morning and haven't seen a thing. I pretty much just keep polishing the counters with peppermint oil now. Needless to say that because of the smell it's beginning to smell a lot like Christmas.

I only wish our landlord would do something about the ones in the drop ceiling (I hate drop ceilings) I suspect the mice are using our apartment as a bridge between the apartments our apartment is between.

mice can lick the peanut butter of the trigger of the snap trap. you can find videos of this on youtube. then I went to walmart and there is a variation on the snap trap by Victor, instead of a metal trip that was 1/4 inch by 1 inch, there is a yellow plastic square about 1 inch square. The rest of the trap is the same. They are not expensive.

This trap is SO sensitive I set it off sometimes just putting it down on the floor. I caught 2 of the suckers with in 2 hours of the trap down in daytime, then no mouse for a month.

PEPPERMINT OIL DOES NOT WORK! I spent over $10 at GNC for a bottle - 100% peppermint oil. At first, I thought the smell drove them away, but that was too easy. About a month ago, I saw one running from my kitchen to the dining area, so I soaked 2 cotton balls with the oil and placed them on the kitchen floor. A few hours later, the mouse came out again, sniffing the floor for food. It ran into one of the cotton balls and kept on sniffing. The smell didn't faze it a bit. I finally stomped the floor and it scurried away. I keep all my food in storage containers and the trash is kept in a grocery bag in the fridge until morning when I take it out to the dumpster. I live in an apartment building and had some neighbors move out, so maybe they were their source. I hate them! I'm ready to go to the animal shelter for cat urine.

the war has been waged. i was in my fuzzy robe and fuzzy slippers getting me a midnight snack when the enemy ran directly across my fuzzy slippers. (I threw them away because they have been tainted by the enemy) i could not believe it. the very next day i called maintence. all they did was put down two glue pads. under my sink. that’s it. then the droppings appeared. on the microwave, on the counter, in the cabinets, on the floor. it’s like i was playing follow the trail of poopoo. then the worst. i moved my fridge to get my sons hot wheel and i found a nest. a nest. i threw up a little in my mouth. like birds the evils had collected stuff from my house to build a nest under my fridge. i threw away the hot wheel. and my mop and broom and yellow mr. clean gloves. it was beyond gross. i called maintence again. two more glue traps were laid. and to top it off he had the nerve to ask me if i seen the mouse. wtf? so i showed him all the nice little pictures i had taken of all the poopoo and nest. my landlord said she couldn’t do much just lay down traps. well the day of reckoning came when i bought my son a new toy shelf and was rearranging his room and found and army's worth of poopoo. everywhere. i went crazy. i scrubbed things that normal people would not think to scrub. i felt infested. i bought those plug in sensors. no go. poopoo in front of it come the mourn. i did the beer bottle. my mice don't drink. i loaded the place so strong with peppermint oil cotton balls that my husband got a headache and said he couldn’t breathe. poopoo on the cotton balls. i bought more glue traps the ones that smell like chocolate. no go there to. then i went in my diaper bag and a bag of my son’s favorite cookies was burglarized. OATMEALRAISIN ladies and gentlemen. the bag had 4 cookies and 1 was left. the sneakies ate 3 whole cookies. so i sprinkled chunks on the glue pad and in two hours the agonizing squeaking of a glued mouse filled my ears with joy. you have to put the apple of Eden directly in the middle of the glue trap. that way they can't back away and get half stuck. the mouse is a worthy adversary. Shall the endurance be with you.

I just saw a mouse run across my dining room! A few days ago I was snacking on a bag of chocolate chip cookies that I got from my backpack during recess and I noticed a small slit at the top. I thought it was unusual but I ate it anyway. Now I think I know where the slit had come from. The mouse had probably went into my backpack and bit its way to get to my chocolate chip cookies!! Is it okay if I ate food that a mouse had probably eaten?! I'm freaking out because I know mouse carry a lot of diseases...

UPDATE: I made extra sure that there was nothing in my pantry that was not in a mouse proof container about 2 weeks ago, knowing that the cold nights might bring those critters back inside.
Then I spread out Cayenne and put out deadly seeds and water. Well they paid a visit last night. I found the seeds were spread around and there were seeds in the water dish. It is a complete mystery to me! that I found seed shells totally across the room on a high up shelf behind some large glass containers and did not even find a 'trail' showing how they got up there. I do not like to kill anything but I cannot tolerate having these rodents come in to share my apartment.

ANDY B. You are living in an intolerable situation and I feel so bad for you. Have you thought of phoning the health department on your own and have them inspect your place.?

Hello everyone. I am also terrified of mice, they scare me as much as spiders, but move in such a fast way. The other night I was watching tv in bed when I was sure I saw something quickly move from the side of my eye. I thought I could be imagining things, but with mice you are usually not imagining things. I used to live in Edinburgh, which has tenement buildings ridden with them, the mice had traumatised me, and I lived in fear of them ever since. I now live in Bath, in a Georgian 200 year old ground floor flat and never thought I would see mice. Well, tonight it was confirmed, it came back again and I saw the little thing, was terrified, and I shake and go pale when I see them. What worked in Edinburgh, and hope will work this time, is I called pest control and they put pots of poison all round the places suspected of their entry, I was assured they would never come back again, and they never did. Am going to call pest control again, can't live in fear again.

It's the urine smell that I must be allergic to. I've had this SEVERE infestation for about 10 years now, but it has got soooo much worse in the last year and is now unmanageable. I live in a tiny Manhattan 'junior' one bedroom. There is nowhere that you can now breathe. They live in every corner of my apt. and the smell is unbearable. Especially now as they have migrated to my bedroom closets. I have to put Vicks on my nose for most of the time as I am disabled and spend 24/7 in the apt. I also burn incense continually.

The landlord has tried to help and has spend quite a lot boarding up everything -- removing the kitchen area etc. He is just getting angry now as the situation just gets worse daily. I'm at the end of my rope. I too smell the odor everywhere. All my glasses taste like the smell of mouse urine. everything I eat and wear. My entire body. I catch a few and see a few, but all I really care about is the constant smell. The apt. is THICK with it.

At this point, I don't believe there is anything that can be done and have to realise that this is my life! I simply cannot afford to move on Social Security and couldn't do it with my joint disease anyway.

What I don't understand is why is it getting so much worse. I used to love my tiny apt. There's so little point in cleaning anymore as I live with about 30 sticky trap[s and poison eveywhere and a combination of dead mouse smell + mouse urine smell. Lovely!! I've had every hole plugged up that can be seen, but there's 20+ years of unmovable furniture and stuff here.

Anyway -- I've vented which is what I needed to do. Thanks for listening. I have to have another good cry now.

"we got sticky traps and one night a mouse got caught and was screaming soooo loud ( for a mouse) it was agonizing,"

^^I just read all these comments and ran out earlier today to buy glue traps and now I'm scared to death if they catch a mouse that I will be too scared to dispose of it. I'm terrified of mice and the thought of hearing it squeal all night is as bad as seeing it scurry around. I think I'm probably going to pick up the glue traps now. No disrespect to anyone who uses them but the more I think about it and as much as I hate mice the glue traps seem pretty cruel.

I live in nyc and have lived in this apartment 3 years. First 2 I had a cat and NO mice even though all my neighbors complained about having them. Then about 6 months ago my cat moved in with my friend because she had mice and I travel alot it worked well for the both of us but unfortunately now I need to bring my cat back because it seems to be thats the ONLY WAY to KEEP MICE GONE if u live in an large apartment building.

Yes the holes can all be filled but the mice WILL eventually eat thru the steel wool. Might take 6-8 months but u will have another mouse. I spoke to someone in my building who had tons of mice then had all the holes filled then killed the remaining few mice trapped in after the holes were filled and she had no problems until about 6-8 months later.

I really wanted to believe the one mouse I saw 3 nights in a row was/is the same mouse and only mouse inside my apartment thats why I bought the glue traps but after reading all about mice I am finally admitting that its probably not the same mouse and even though I dont see any droppings or evidence of mice and I keep my place minimalist and spotless clean they are probably in here and will stay keep and/or keep wondering back in from neighbors apartments unless I bring my cat back in to scare them away.

I will call 311 tomorrow and make a complaint. This building I live in knows that there are holes in the corners where the radiators are but they are too cheap to pay someone to fill up the holes in everyones apartment. Its a health hazard and no one should get comfotable living with disease infested rodents. Its sad so many people give up and live with it. I asked a neighbor why they dont complain and they said I'm use to it. WOW! I mean she has a child and she is willing to risk the child touching mouse droppings?! unfreakinbelievable. I will not and can not and refuse to live with them and if u feel the same get a cat. They require very lil and if u dont have the bad fortune of getting one that isnt a mouse hunter then u fall in love with it if not only because it keeps all mouse far away!

I asked a neighbor why they dont complain and they said I’m use to it.

We were struggling with mice for a while and tried snapping traps baited with penaut butter and cheese and nothing happened ( for months), then we got sticky traps and one night a mouse got caught and was screaming soooo loud ( for a mouse) it was agonizing, I put on rain sounds to drown out the noise and we haven't seen a mouse in 3 months......until we found droppings all over the kitchen counter, ready to start all over again!

Howdy all, back again
Found what I believe was the access hole-a chipped electrical plate cover (wall outlet) for my refrigerator..surprisingly tiny but big enough as entryway for 4 legged rodents-it had a delightful challenging course of the hanging fridge cord for the mice to traverse downward onto my kitchen floor. Stuffed it w/steel wool as per recommended from hardware store suggestions for mouse proofing. Found 1 dead deer mouse-type under fridge when I did my daily mouse hunt/check the traps behind the fridge. Can't wait to get my critter repellent granules--the granulated fox/bobcat urine granules, that is. Hope this is the cure all I've been searching for. Tired of being paranoid and nervous in my own home; time to return to sanity. BTW, my poison of choice was provided by the very reputable D-Con company. My snap traps by Victor, baited with a generic pb-no Jiffy or Skippy brand for my unwelcome intruders. Remember folks, with snap traps lightly swathe pb on top AND bottom of bait tray. Hope this info helps. Have a lovely day.

H'lo all. An unnecessary follow-up, but wot the hell. I have set out snap traps behind my refrigerator (baited with a blended mixture of pb and bird seed). Caught one (quite dead) and read some more stuff online and replaced the used snap trap with two of 'em; side by side. I've set one on "sensitive" and the other on "firm"..wonder if this'll make a difference..we shall see...I'm reading online greater success comes from pairing traps-be it glue traps but esp. snap traps. Anywhoo, while digging around online a came across a link for mouse repellent called "shake away animal repellent" and ordered some. 20 oz bottle for 14.95 (minus s/h) and was wondering if anyone else has used this product and how it worked (out) for them. The testimonials are all aglow about how wonderful this product is, how great it works, how humane (not that I care) it is. Shake Away is basically concentrated bobcat & fox urine granulated and you sprinkle it (outdoors; perimeter of foundation) and indoors (every 10'x10' {100 sq. ft}) wherever you see, have noticed mice activity. Surprisingly, users say there is very little smell from this, even in small enclosed areas. Shake Away seems to work on the premise of the hypersensitive sense of smell that mice have. Totally freaks them and they exit, wherever they encounter the smell. So, anybody else out there use this? I'd truly love to hear back anybody's experience using Shake Away Animal Repellent. Here's the website-

This is quite an informative (and funny) post site concerning mice removal. Tonight I was watching late night TVland when I saw something shoot across the floor from my TV and ZOOM under my recliner. Yup, I got mice...lemme tell you I DO HATE those meeces to pieces. Damn it, I say. I had a mouse in my same apt in 2001..killed it with D-Con mouse poison(green pellets in wedge shaped paper container) was lucky to find the dead rodent. its' white underbelly stained bloody red from ingesting the poison. I got no kids/pets so don't care/worried to use poison...just want to be rid of the mice. I've read MANY of the entries here and there's a consensus (kind of) on what works/doesn't work:

Snap traps work if bait (peanut butter) is applied to the top AND bottom of the trigger (where the bait: bait top and bottom) I wonder about cream cheese as bait? Anyone know if the old joke of mice in love with cheese?

Glue traps generally work. the snap trap/glue trap is best. I'll probably take my own advice and try this one.

A normal, intelligent cat (DON't declaw), raised by a mother cat who thought him how to survive (please no useless declawed, disturbed prissy city cat) would also provide excellent results. Don't forget those little yappy-type terrier dog breeds. They were bred to kill rabbits, but killing mice would be a pleasure and a breeze for those barky, hyper canines.

Peppermint oil (daubed? spread?) along baseboards, kitchen cupboards...wherever you're finding mice turds/urine smudges..whereever you suspect them to (humanely) evict the little disease carriers. I wonder if this method makes your whole place stink like peppermint?

What doesn't work?
Overall people here slam the electronic plug-in things (like Rid-X). Probably works best for insects. Mice are tough little buggers and probably ignore it.
Actually I'd be impressed anyone reads this but wtf, I simply had to share. For everyone here dealing with unwanted vermin, don't freak out. There's lots of good advice/success stories shared here so hang in there. You will win.
