How to Clean Venetian Blinds

Staff Writer · Dec 1, 2009

Cleaning venetian blinds can prove to be a difficult and frustrating task. However, there are a couple of ways in which you can clean your blinds effectively and efficiently. Follow these instructions for ways to clean your venetian blinds.

On the Window

If your blinds have been cleaned fairly recently, you can clean them without disassembly. If this isn’t the case, you will want to follow the alternative method.

Begin by covering your window with old towels so that your windows will not get dirty. Extend the blinds and place them in the most open position. Using a commercial cleanser or water and ammonia solution, you will need to get a wash cloth or other cleaning device wet with a solution. Wipe each slat individually. Fold the cloth around the slat so that you are cleaning both sides. After you do this, you will need to redo the blinds with clean water or a soft, dry cloth. This is in order to clean off the solution; the latter recommendation is preferred by some to reduce water spots.

If you have cloth blinds, or your venetian blinds are dusty, you can choose to clean them on the window with a vacuum. Close the blinds so that the top edge of each slat is facing you. Holding each blind steady, begin vacuuming at the top of each blind. With your other hand, brush a few slats from the center to each side with the dusting brush vacuum attachment. Use this procedure for each blind. When you are finished, rotate the blinds so that the other side is facing you. Then repeat the process.

Complete Cleaning

If your blinds are in need of a thorough cleaning, you may need to remove the blinds completely to clean them.

Remove the blinds completely. You can choose to clean them by laying them flat or by hanging them from a clothesline or shower rod. Using a similar cleaning solution as in the other method, you will need to clean each slat individually. Turn it over and do the other side as well. After you clean each one individually, rinse the blinds. Hang the blinds to dry them.

Cleaning Your Venetian Blinds

For any of the preceding methods, exercise great care while cleaning your venetian blinds. If the slat becomes creased and bent, it cannot be repaired. Your blinds would have to be restrung, slat-by-slat, around a new piece. Take caution and care when cleaning your blinds.

Clean your venetian blinds on a regular basis to ensure they do not become too dirty. Depending on their environment and use, accordingly clean the blinds on an appropriate basis.

If you choose, you may want to have your venetian blinds cleaned professionally. It may be worth the cost if your blinds warrant such attention.
