Hallway Decorating: How to Make a Starburst Mirror

Staff Writer · Dec 30, 2010

A starburst mirror can add a decorative element to any boring hallway. Many times, a starburst mirror is so intricate that very little other decoration is necessary in the area. Below is an explanation of how to make a starburst mirror.

Determine the Size and Materials of Your Mirror

The first step in building a starburst mirror is to decide how big you want it to be. Measure the space where you intend to hang the mirror, but leave at least three inches between the end of the mirror and the beginning of the walls, floor or ceiling. This extra space will prevent he mirror from overwhelming the space. Keep in mind that you can also make several small starburst mirrors.

Next, you must determine whether you would like to have a mirror made out of metal or wood. Metal is sturdier, but may require you to professionally solder the mirrors to the metal. If you do not know or have the tools to solder, you may need to have the task done at a home decorating or hardware store.

A wood starburst mirror will be lighter, but will also allow you to paint the background of the mirror whatever color you like. This extra pop of color could add an eye-catching element to your room and make your mirror unique and looking as though professionally designed.

Purchase Your Materials

Most home decorating and hardware stores will have the wood, metal, small circular mirrors and other materials necessary to make a starburst mirror. When purchasing these materials, ask employees whether they prefer a certain brand for your task or if they have any recommendations about extra tools or materials you will need to complete the project.

Wood and metal rods for your mirror likely come in many different lengths and widths; mirrors are probably pre-cut into small circles or other shapes. Make sure to purchase at least two mirrors for each metal or wood rod, one for each end of the rod. Additional mirrors will add extra shine to your project, but may be unnecessary. Materials to affix metal rods include a sturdy wire; to affix mirrors to either wood or metal rods you will need a strong adhesive. A large circular mirror is also required for the center of the mirror.

Assemble Your Mirror

If applicable, the first step is to paint the wooden rods your chosen color. Allow the rods to completely dry prior to assembling the mirror.

Next, lay the rods at different angles, but with them meeting in a central point. At this point, the rods should have the general shape of a starburst. Affix the rods together using sturdy wire. Once tied together, glue the central point to ensure that it won’t move. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Finally, using the glue affix the large mirror to the center of the starburst. To do so lay the mirror face down and apply the adhesive to its center. Lay the center of the connected rods on the adhesive. Let completely dry, overnight if necessary.

Finally, affix the small mirrors to the ends of your rods, using the same method as for when you attached the middle mirror. Let the adhesive dry overnight. For extra security, consider reapplying adhesive to all mirrors before hanging.
