Great Products to Organize Your Desk

Is your apartment sparkling clean and perfectly organized except for that pesky little corner where you work? Is your tiny desk drowning in stacks of paper and books, and are you always unable to find your favorite pen when you need it, having to settle instead on a boring Bic? Have no fear, help is here—today we’ll show you how to organize even the smallest desk space so it allows for the perfect level of productivity.

Original Organizing

Think beyond the typical desk organizers, which can take up space and merely add to the clutter. As always with apartment organizing, think vertical. Instead of stacking your papers, slide them into a vertical wall organizer. This takes up less space and also helps you clearly label your papers. You can also go vertical on the desk itself, setting items upright in a small organizer instead of spreading them across the desk surface.

Very Vertical

Hanging items on the wall near your desk not only clears up desktop space, but also allows you to easily see your documents and other supplies. These handy wall organization systems offer the opportunity to make your organizing accessories both fun and functional. In addition to freeing up desk space, wall organization also puts your possessions and obligations in plain sight, preventing you from “forgetting” about a bill or a task you need to complete.

Desktop calendars are popular, but they get can easily buried under your work. You might look into using this impressive magnetic wall calendar, which allows you not only to write messages, but also to affix items using the power of magnets. It’s a little thing that will go a long way toward helping your organize your desk and your life.

Losing small items like tacks and paper clips can be easy. Store them vertically and keep them in your sight with a handy see and store panel.

Although shelves themselves are horizontal, they save space by allowing you to store things without taking up floor or desk space. Consider putting up some simple shelves above your desk to help you store frequently used items.

Take a Different “Tack”

Bulletin boards are great for organizing casual notes and reminders. If you’re not into the traditional cork bulletin board, linen and magnetic boards are a stylish new option. Magnetic boards in particular allow you to get creative with the magnets you use to affix items to the boards; soon your office will be more fun than ever before, and you’ll be searching for important notes to affix to your magnetboard.

Attack the Annoying

Computer and electronics cables always present a major obstacle to organized living. Thankfully, there are now many options—some adorable—for controlling cords and letting your deskwork be about work, not pulling cords from one end of the desk to another.

Do it with Drawers

Deep drawers are a good place to store files using hanging folders, and shallow drawers can be excellent for organizing desk accessories—provided you use drawer organizers to keep your belongings in line. Instead of always lamenting your inability to find your tape or stapler, why not establish a place where those items belong? You can even label the bottom of your drawer organizer with the name of the item that goes in a particular place.

If your desk itself is low on drawer space, look into obtaining a filing cabinet or other set of drawers for keeping your items organized. Ideally, the drawers you get will fit under your desk to save space. You can also consider using close space for file storage, especially if you don’t refer to your files very often.

Rejecting Junk

Any items on your desk that can’t be successfully incorporated into your new organizing system—they’re too old, too odd, or too unnecessary—need to go. They have no place in your new, clutter-free life. That wrinkled copy of Sports Illustrated from last year? Recycle it. The plastic cup from Subway you’d been using to hold (and lose) pens? Use it to drink water instead, since your pens are snug in their new (clearly labeled!) drawer organizer. A half-finished scarf you’ve been knitting since 1998? Put it in the crafts basket; it doesn’t belong on your desk?

If these tips don’t help you organize your home office, you might be beyond hope, or maybe you’re just not trying hard enough. Don’t give up the ghost, and always remember there are options—you’re not alone in being disorganized, but it’s also perfectly possible to become less scattered. Your deskwork and your life will be more successful once they’re better organized.
