Getting Bedroom Decor Ideas by Choosing a Theme

Unless you are an interior designer, bedroom decor ideas may not come easy. Choosing accessories, colors, bedding and furniture can seem completely overwhelming. It is often very helpful to choose a theme for decorating your bedroom; a theme will help guide you through the design process. Here are some great ideas.

A Cottage Retreat for Your Bedroom

If you are looking to design a bedroom that is cozy and inviting, then a country cottage themed room may be just the thing. A cottage themed bedroom should focus on pastels, florals and shabby chic furniture and designs. Yellow is a great color to paint the walls, and simple white bedding with small rosebuds will help enhance your theme. For furniture, look for white washed and vintage furniture.

The great thing about cottage decor and style is that your furniture has to coordinate, but it doesn’t have to match. Check out yard sales for handpainted vintage finds. Some great accessories to highlight your cottage theme include decorative mirrors, keepsake boxes and candles. Place a few coordinated keepsake boxes on top of your dresser, and choose a decorative mirror set in white washed wood. Candles are a great accent for any room. Look for floral candles to, again, enhance your cottage themed bedroom.

An Island of Your Own

Perhaps you want to recall the relaxing Caribbean vacation you had every time you step into your bedroom, or perhaps you have never been to the Islands and want to create one for yourself. An island themed bedroom is both relaxing and romantic. Choose from blue, green or brown paint colors, but be sure to keep them on the muted side. Nothing too bold, or the calming effect of the colors will be lost. Teak or cherry wood furniture should be used. Either purchase a canopy bed, or create your own with a canopy ceiling track. Hang sheer drapery from the track, and create a whimsical, breezy feeling for your bed.

To enhance your island themed bedroom, choose accessories with an island theme, such as palm tree patterned bedding, rugs and bedside lamps. Wall decoration is also important. Look for a tapestry depicting the true beauty of the islands to hang from your wall. You will create a window effect, as if you are looking at the scene from your island room through your window.

A Romantic Rendezvous in Your Room

If you desire a truly romantic bedroom, make Morocco your theme. With its traditionally rich, dark reds and orange colors, a Morocco themed bedroom will surely create a dramatic, romantic effect for your bedroom. Paint the walls a deep red or blood orange color. Focus on intricate fabrics when choosing your bedding and curtains, such as dark red, velvet curtains and matching throw pillows for your bed. Gold is important to the Moroccan theme, so work some gold into your bedroom decor with accent pieces, such as decorative mirrors that have been inlayed in gold painted material. Another great accent piece is an incense burner. Burn sweet, musky smelling incense and complete your romantic, Moroccan bedroom.

Interior decorators are not necessary to create bedroom decor ideas. Once you have a focal point or theme, you are more than half way there.
