Five Tips for Choosing a Shower Head

Staff Writer · Jan 24, 2010

Choosing a shower head may not seem like a big decision but there are many factors you should consider when deciding on one. You may want a shower head with a certain aesthetic appearance, like antique looking or a modern feel, but remember to consider other factors as well before making your choice.

Type of Spray

When shopping for your new shower head take into consideration what type of spray they feature. Some shower heads only have one type of spray while others are adjustable and offer a variety of different pressure and sprays to choose from. The adjustable shower heads may not be as appealing to the eye as the others but not everyone in your house may like the same type of spray, making the adjustable spray the best option. Some shower heads offer a massaging feature as well with a pulsating stream of water that sometimes can be controlled by the user for the right amount of pressure.

Fixed or Hand Held?

Most shower heads now are fixed to the wall or ceiling and you will not be able to move them once mounted but there are a few different styles that offer the ability to remove the shower head from its cradle and spray wherever is needed. The hand held shower heads are very handy when you have children to bathe and rinse their hair but other than that, it is not really necessary.

Going Green

Many shower heads sold today offer lower water usage which is a great choice if you are trying to go green and conserve. Check the packaging to see what the rate of flow is in order to compare. Some shower heads may state they are low water usage but may only be slightly less than normal. An average shower head flows at around two and a half gallons a minute. Use this to compare those that claim to be low-flow.

Water Pressure

If your home or apartment does not have good water pressure then you may want to invest in a shower head that will get you the most pressure possible. Look for shower heads that advertise they are made for low pressure systems. You may also want to check for a feature called a pressure-balance valve that will keep the water pressure stable in the shower even when other items throughout the home are being used at the same time.

Style of Shower Head

Shower heads can be a very simple looking item for your bathroom or it can be an elegant item that is not only functional, but beautiful as well. There are very stylish options out there now for shower heads and you will want to choose one that will match the rest of your bathroom decor, whether it is traditional or more modern. Remember to also choose a shower head with a finish that will match the rest of your bathroom as well. Shower heads usually come in stainless steel, chrome, brass, nickel or plastic.
