Features of Family-Friendly Apartments

Staff Writer · Oct 2, 2009

Family friendly apartments provide you the comfort and convenience that you’ll grow to appreciate while you’re renting. You may have to pay a little bit more in rent, but you can make up the difference in other areas. Here are 5 family friendly features to look for:

1. Two or More Baths

One overlooked feature for family friendly apartments is at least two full baths. Families spend a lot of time using the bathrooms in the home, and there’s usually a traffic jam at some point during the day when only one bathroom is available. If you have at least one other bathroom in the apartment, you can cut down on the time spent waiting for and rotating bathroom time, and put that time towards more productive projects. Apartments for families are designed with multiple baths, because the total number of family members are taken into consideration.

2. Laundry Facilities or Hook Ups

One essential feature that you cannot neglect when looking for an apartment for families is the ability to do laundry at the rental. Preferably, you want an apartment that comes with a washer and dryer in the unit, or at least hookups for you to put your own in. At the very least, there should be a laundry facility on the premises for you to access anytime. This is both a convenience and safety issue. You don’t want to be stuck in a public laundromat at late hours because you work during the day. Even a paid laundry facility on the premises is better than not having any at all.

3. Storage Space

When you’re looking for family friendly apartments, check to make sure there is adequate storage space inside your apartment. You’ll need enough space to store your family’s clothes, books, projects, extra food and household items. Otherwise, your apartment will get cluttered very quickly, making it hard for your family to enjoy, and it may become a safety issue as well. If storage is not provided, then there should be enough space for you to add your own tubs, boxes and other temporary storage solutions.

4. A Nearby Park

If you want to give your family happy memories to share and treasure for a long time, take them for walks to a nearby park. You should look for apartments that are within walking distance of a park in a safe neighborhood, so that you can enjoy times there together. You might also plan a picnic at the park. If you rent too far away from a park, you may not take the time to drive to one, and it just won’t be the same.

5.  Friendly Pet Policies

Many families own a pet, and they obviously won’t give it up just to get into an apartment. One important feature to consider when you’re a pet owner is a pet friendly policy. Does the apartment you’re looking at refuse or welcome pets? Are they just tolerant of pets, and do you risk an eviction or your security deposit? Make sure that the apartment you want to rent has a history of allowing various pets, and has a reputation of being pet friendly.

Don’t settle for rentals that are not family friendly apartments. In all likelihood, there are apartments for families in your city, but you have to look for them carefully and tell others about  your search.
