Determining the Rug Size Needed in Your Apartment

Staff Writer · Jan 4, 2011

When it comes to the rug size needed for a room in your apartment, there are a few factors that go into determining what the optimal size is, based on the various functions the rug will serve and the overall look wanted for the apartment room. Here are some tips to help in determining the rug size that you may need.

Bathroom Rugs

If you go to the bathroom rug section of even a box store that sells a bit of everything, you may be a bit overwhelmed by your options for sizes of bathroom rugs. From small rugs fitted to wrap around the toilet area to hugs rugs that likely would be too big to fit in your apartment bathroom, the variety is out there. You can get any size bathroom rug you may need.

First, you want to determine the size of your bathroom and your needs in the rug size. If you have children that tend to be frequently messy (or are messy yourself), you’ll want to get a rug that absorbs water easily and is also machine washable. Sizing for that rug should be a large chunk of the bathroom floor, at least covering the length of the bathtub.

If the rug will mostly function as decoration for the bathroom, go with the size that best compliments the decor. For example, if you are going for bold colors and over-the-top decor, a full-size rug may do, but a Parisian bathroom theme that focuses on the elegant may necessitate a petite rug in matching colors as the walls or shower curtain.

Living Room Rugs

There are a few schools of thought in how big a living room rug should be. Many decorators feel that a living room rug size should encompass a furniture set, that it should establish a living area by connecting the sofa, chairs and coffee table, making a clearly defined conversation space. Other decorators feel that, in order to properly display a unique or decorative rug, no coffee table or other piece of furniture should rest upon it, necessitating a smaller rug size, so that you are not hindered by the rug in other decorative choices.

The ultimate rug size for your apartment depends on the size of your living room furniture and coffee table, if going for the traditional living room centerpiece rug. For example, if you have a love seat, you’re going to have a goal of a much smaller apartment rug size than someone with larger furniture sets. If going for a purely decorative rug set apartment from the rest of your living room, the only rug size limitations you have are your own personal preference and the space your living room provides.

Sizing the Rug for Your Apartment

If you don’t have measuring tape to measure the lengths of rugs, you can use other methods, such as how many times your purse would have to be lined up to reach the length of the rug size. This may work well if you have a large purse. Others opt to use a typical notebook-sized folder. Lie the folder out, then double it over as many times as the length of the rug space you want to fill. Then, when you go to the store, use the same method to determine if the potential rug is a space match.
