Decorating Closet Doors

Staff Writer · Jan 18, 2011

One of the often overlooked places of decor and self-expression are closet doors. It’s an area often seen by kids as a place to display beloved celeb posters or artistic triumphs. Yet, it’s unlimited in the ways adults can enjoy this open canvas for decorating. Here are some inexpensive tricks to make them look great and match your place.

Mirrored Closet Doors

Mirrored closet doors are really popular. Not only is the mirror convenient when getting dressed and groomed for the day, having mirrored closets can give the illusion of more space and a larger room. When decorating mirrored closet doors, consider using photos around the edges of the right and left side of the closet door, creating a rather “framed” look of your photos of happy memories. You can use removable tape or stick reprints into the edges of the door if it’s a framed door itself. Beware that you should only use reprints in this endeavor, as the photos could become damaged.

Stickers on the Closet

You may opt to place stickers on your closet doors. This is more practical if you own your home. If not, you’ll want to make sure to only use removable stickers or face potentially steep charges upon moving out for the landlord having to replace the doors. Removable stickers are pretty easily accessible. If you really want to use a particular permanent sticker, simply don’t remove the backing. Instead, use removable tape to stick it to the closet. That way, it’s also reusable.

If your closet doors are mirrored, stickers on them are only practical above eye level or on each side, so that they don’t interfere with your image. If your closet doors are plain, place them wherever you’d like.

Collage on the Door

Use your door to create a collage of things that make you happy. In doing so, you will feel uplifted when you see it. Walking into your room, it can easily become a focal point. It will also then be a one-of-a-kind work of art in your own home, with the collage unique only to the door. Get creative. You can theme the collage to anything you want. From aspirations of who you hope to be or of miniature prints of art or anything that you find beautiful and inspiring.

Bring on the Paint

If you have a wooden door, consider painting it a solid color. It will look best if it’s a color that compliments or contrasts the color of your walls or decor. In addition to painting it a solid color, you may also opt to use stencils in painting designs over the solid color, once it dries. You can go traditional, with a floral pattern, or get more creative with a beach scene or perhaps even a custom stencil of your dog or cat. It should reflect the thoughts and things that you hold dear and that will inspire you. When it comes to decorating your closet doors, you want to focus on the personal and the fun.
