I agree. I live in an apartment and my neighbors leave for work at 8 am and get home sometime around 1am, during which their dog whines/howls the ENTIRE time. Unfortunately my landlady is friends with these renters and told me their other dog died and current dog is in mourning. I sympathize with the situation, but if your Grandma was in mourning over you Grandpa's death, I don't think you'd lock her up in the house all day alone with no bathroom access. So, I ended up writing them a SUPER nice note (really) basically saying: you might not be aware that your dog is very distressed and howling for hours on end; your apartment shares a wall with my mom-in-law's bedroom and the dog is keeping her up all night, can we talk about this? The next day there was crap on my doorstep. Real mature.
I'm peeved by this silly American sentiment that animal rights are more important than human rights. We're miserable, the dog is miserable, but the owners swear they adore their pet. I'm not buying it...
