Have you thought of hanging panels of fabric from the walls? One of my favorite ways of evoking "mood Lighting" is with a small busket type lamp and a colored bulb, just aim at a wall, think about the pictures or artwork you have, this can be a fun cheap way of giving a room some ambiance. you could also shadow something on the wall, just let your imagination go.
