I built a pantry out of a broom closet, using 1x2s and particle board. I decided where I wanted the shelves, screwed the 1x2s to the wall through the studs (wider side to the wall, leaving the shorter side as a lip to support the shelves), and painted the entire inside. Then I cut the particle board to fit the inside of the closet and painted that. When it dried I covered the surface of the shelves with clear contact paper for smooth, easy to clean surface. I put the shelves on the 1x2s, and voila! Last, I put a wire basket drawer unit on the floor for small items - although you could easily just leave the floor as is for storage of items than can sit on the floor. A pantry, for about 4 hours work and the cost of supplies. The nice thing about doing it myself was I was able to cut everything to fit - except for the wire drawer unit (which determined the height of the bottom shelf), nothing was premade, so sizes didn't matter.
