Bathroom Storage Ideas: Under the Sink

Staff Writer · May 20, 2010

Apartment bathrooms tend to be smaller with bathroom storage being even smaller. This can make it difficult to keep a well-organized bathroom with all of the things you need to complete routine tasks in the bathroom. Some apartment renters end up storing items in their bedrooms and using a caddy back and forth, the same way they did in college. You don’t have to do that if you use these bathroom storage ideas to maximize the space under the sink.

Bathroom Sink Drawer

In addition to the drawers that were installed with your cabinet (if you have any) you can purchase and install a “portable” bathroom sink drawer. A standard size measures 9-1/4 x 12 inches. You can use it to store many things, including a small trash can under the bathroom sink. This is a better way to store the trash can under the bathroom sink, instead of squeezing it between the piping.

Bathroom Sink Storage Shelf

Under the sink bathroom storage shelves help to provide additional space under the sink. For example, you can find ones that are built with a metal frame and come with five plastic adjustable shelves. You can move the shelves around to fit around your bathroom pipes. They weigh about five and a half pounds and measure around 11 inches deep x 17 inches high x 18 inches inches long. With the extra shelves you can store your bathroom cleaning supplies, toilet tissue and miscellaneous grooming products.

Bathroom Cabinet Roll out Drawers

A popular bathroom storage product is a cabinet roll-out drawer. The drawers allow you to maximize space, while making it convenient for you to access your things. The ones made with industrial-grade ball-bearing glides are more durable than cabinet roll out drawers made from plastic.  The benefit of using a sturdy bathroom cabinet roll out drawer is that they can hold heavy items.

The only problem with these is that it may not fit under your specific bathroom sink. It depends on how your pipes are placed, and the amount of space you have available. A standard size measures 21 x 14 x 4 inches. They are easy to install and will take only a few minutes of your time. If they don’t fit you can return them.

Bathroom Cabinet Door

Take advantage of your bathroom cabinet door by purchasing storage racks. This bathroom storage solution is similar to shoe racks and other organizers that hang over your closet door.  These fit right over the bathroom cabinet door and have enough space between shelves to store upright items. They’re often already pre-assembled, so you can hang them over the door and not have to worry about a complex installation.

These are a just a few ideas for bathroom storage under the sink that can make a big difference in a small bathroom. You bathroom won’t look cluttered, and you won’t have to take up space in other rooms to store bathroom items.
