Bachelor Pad Cooking: 5 Simple Ways to Impress

Staff Writer · Jan 10, 2011

When you’re living in a bachelor pad, the assumption is that you don’t know how to cook and that you’re eating out most of the time. If you’ve fallen into that trap, it’s time to get out of it. Why not take a big step and invite a guest or two over for a meal that you’ve cooked on your own? There are simple ways to impress them with your cooking.

1 – Bake Salmon

A lot of people don’t know what to do with salmon. It’s a tasty fish that will leave an impression, because chances are your guests don’t know what to do with salmon either. It’s served in some restaurants as a gourmet meal, and yet it’s so simple to prepare. The trick is to buy wild caught salmon, which may or may not be available locally. You can order it online and have it shipped directly to you. Many Alaskan markets make their money shipping fresh caught salmon to customers in other states using overnight delivery. Order fillet pieces and marinate them in your favorite Italian dressing. Lightly oil the baking pan, wrap the salmon in parchment paper with the dressing, and place it in the pan. Bake on 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes to start. Check to see whether it’s done, because how thick the fillet is determines when it’s done. Keeping baking for an additional 10 minutes until it’s done.

2 – Cook While Guests Arrive

You don’t want to keep your guests waiting too long, but they should see you in action. They’ll believe it when they see it, and be impressed with your cooking as they see you put the finishing touches on a meal. Time the arrival of guests for the last 15 minutes or so before you have to take a meal out of the oven or off the stove. Look confident and that one act will have a lasting impression.

3 – Foreign Cuisines

Choosing an easy to cook cuisine with a fancy name, that’s also foreign to you and your guest is impressive. It can be as simple as Kung Pao Chicken or curry. The point is that you’re willing to go beyond the norm and try something new. That may go over well with the person you’re trying to impress, as long as it ends up tasting good. Before you try a new recipe on someone else, make sure you cook it a few times first. You could even ask a friend, co-worker or neighbor to taste it and give you honest feedback.

4 – Dessert

Adding a dessert besides scoops of ice cream is impressive bachelor pad cooking. Some favorites to choose from include:

  • Chocolate souffle
  • Cheesecake
  • Fruit pie, such as apple pie
  • Chocolate pudding cake

You could make some of these desserts a day prior to save you time.

5 – Bake Your Own Bread

If you really want to take bachelor pad cooking up a notch, bake you own bread for the meal. It will make your apartment smell great, and it will create a cozy and warm atmosphere. Breads are easy to make, and there are a variety to choose from, including flat bread. At the end of the meal, wrap up the bread and give it your guest to take home.

Have fun with bachelor pad cooking, and it will be that much easier to impress others.
