If I don't have renter's insurance and there is a fire in my apartment, will I have to pay for the cost of fixing the apartment (drywall, carpet, cleaning it)? I live in Southern California.

It is likely that your insurance will cover this loss, less your deductible. File a claim and they'll investigate and let you know.

Recently there was a fire which came very close to our apartments. Our property was not damaged; however, the buildings are covered with some ash and inside the apartment it smells like smoke. What will our renters insurance cover, if anything? i.e. Carpet cleaning? Who is responsible for the clean-up?
