Accent Walls and Statement Pieces

Make any room in your apartment a conversation waiting to happen by creating an accent wall or adding a statement piece. Depending on what you go for, this might not even cost you a dime.

Creating an accent (sometimes called gallery) wall can give your room a whole new dynamic. These are most common in living rooms, but definitely can work in a good-sized bedroom as well. If you have an odd corner or other blank wall space that appears good for nothing, these are also good candidates for an accent wall. Basically you are taking one wall in the room and transforming it to become your main decorated space. This can be through adding geometric decals, photos, art, shelves, you name it.

Do a little soul (and apartment) searching and think about what you want this room to say about you. Then gather items that translate into your personality. If you love photos, creating a gallery is the perfectly personalized way to decorate your accent wall. Choose frames carefully to make the wall as a whole look complete, and practice laying out the frames on the floor before committing them to the wall. If you’ve got a bunch of framed photos already, why not consider swapping some of them out? This will add a fresh dimension to your décor.

If you have an attractive collection of some sort, this is also a good way to display it. Choose interesting shelves and hang them at varying levels to give the wall a bit of movement and interest. Odd numbered groups tend to look best and be sure to avoid cluttering. If you’ve got a ton of something, maybe choose your favorites to display rather than cramming them all together. Think also about colors and patterns. Include other mementoes in the mix. Remember, you are going for visual impact.

A statement piece is a little more bold and defined. It’s a basically a piece of furniture, art, etc. that dominates (in a pleasing room) a space and defines the rest of the décor. In the bedroom for example, this can often be a dramatic headboard. Elsewhere in the apartment a large piece of art, a stellar couch or gorgeous light fixture can also act as a statement piece. You basically want whatever it is to start a conversation when guests see it for the first time.

It’s difficult to go out looking for a statement piece, it’s one of those inspired finds you discover when not looking for it. Aim for something quirky or eye-catching or something that screams you. If you saw this in someone’s house would you comment on it? That’s a statement piece. However, make sure you really love it. Just because something will get people talking doesn’t mean you want to look at it every day.

Also be sure to consider your current décor when bringing home this new resident. Unless you are in the midst of a design overhaul, you want the new piece to blend comfortably with the existing look. You want a ‘wow’ statement not a ‘ugh’ statement.

In the end, decorating your apartment is all about you, so if it feels right and makes you happy, it’s an excellent design idea!
