5 Tips for Moving into a Loft-Style Apartment

Staff Writer · Aug 18, 2010

Moving into a loft style apartment can be challenging, due to space and location issues. The layout of a loft can make it difficult to move furniture upstairs. The storage space is also limited. You can overcome some of these problems by using the following tips:

1 – Parking

If you’re moving into a downtown area, parking during the move may be tough if parking isn’t available at the building. Plan for this portion of the move first. If you’re renting a moving truck, you may be able to take advantage of parking spaces designated for loading and unloading trucks. Confirm that you won’t get a parking ticket, or get towed for parking your truck there. If you’re using a car or pickup truck, then you’ll need access to a regular parking space close to the building. Another option is for a building manager to keep an eye on your car or truck while you move things into the lobby, but you’ll have to work out the details prior to move-in day.

2 – Use a Ladder

The toughest part of moving into a loft-style apartment is getting the mattress and other furniture upstairs. The best way is to use a ladder. It’s better than using the railing and pulling on a rope. For example, attach a rope to the mattress, and then slide it up the ladder to the upstairs section of the loft.  It’s not a one-person job though, so get at least two other people if you can to help you with the move. If you can afford to hire movers, they’ll take care of it for you.

3 – Reserve Freight Elevator Ahead of Time

If the apartment is located in a building with a freight elevator, then you should get permission to use it on the day of the move. Don’t wait until the day of the move to get permission or the key. Ask for it ahead of time. A freight elevator is larger than a traditional elevator, and you won’t have to maneveur around the other tenants in the building while using the regular elevator.

4 – Get a Bed with Drawers

Finding space-saving solutions is key to moving into a loft-style apartment. For example, you’ll have more space upstairs if you combine your bed with drawers for closing. You can buy one with bed drawers attached to the bed, or find storage solutions that will fit underneath your bed. Your clothing will be out of sight, and you’ll have more flooring space for other furniture or to move around.

5 – Organize Boxes

Label your boxes prior to the move, and pack boxes according to the room they belong. When you move in, you can stack the boxes in the rooms you’ve labeled the boxes with until you can unpack them. For example, a box full of utensils can be labeled “Kitchen,” and you can stack all the kitchen boxes together in one spot. You should also write down what’s in the box, so that you don’t go crazy trying to find something. Write a list of items directly on the box.

There are many benefits to living a loft-style apartment. Once you figure out storage and furniture solutions, you’ll enjoy the living in one for home and even business use.
