A childcare center must meet the majority of a parent’s needs, including being near their residence. Finding a childcare center near your apartment, however, may not be easy and will most certainly require lots of research and legwork. Below are 5 tips for finding a childcare center near your apartment.
1. Check Large Company Recommendations
Many large companies will pay for or subsidize their employee’s child care expenses or, at the very least, recommend childcare centers for their employee’s children. Make a list of the large companies, firms or government agencies near your home and check their websites to see if they make any childcare center recommendations. Often, these large companies will have done the necessary legwork, including investigating the center’s safety record, guidelines, accreditation and licensing and legal history, thereby providing you a list of the best places to check on.
2. Ask Your Neighbors
Regardless of whether you live in a large apartment complex or a small building with just a few units, your neighbors might have lived in the area longer and know more about nearly childcare centers. Asking for advice and recommendations will assist you in knowing where to look. Larger apartment complexes might even be able to provide you with a list of nearby centers and their contact information.
3. Take a Walk
One of the best ways to find facilities in your area is to take a long walk with your child and see what is available in your area. This is a great way to find smaller childcare centers that may not be advertised online or be well-known in the area. These facilities may offer more individual attention and be less expensive while offering just as much stimulation and security as a larger facility.
You might also want to take a walk around the neighborhood in which you work, to see whether there are any centers nearby that you might be interested in. While you may want a place in your neighborhood, you may also consider one of the facilities near your office.
4. Research the Facility
After gathering a list of facility names, you should do some research on them. Start with checking out the facility’s websites to see what they claim to have for accreditation, the number of students and other similar facts. Next, perform a general search on the facility to see whether any complaints or other opinions on it have been made and whether they are negative or positive. You should also check the facility’s accreditation and licensing with your secretary of state’s office, which can also be done online. If complaints or other problems exist, you should not continue to include that facility in your lists of possibility childcare centers.
5. Interview and Touring Facilities
After locating three to five facilities that interest you, it is essential that you interview and tour each facility. Most childcare facilities will schedule appointments during the school day so that you can see the facility in operation and get an idea of whether it is acceptable to you and if your child’s personality will work in the facility. Do not bring your child to these appointments, as it may overwhelm or confuse him or her.
