5 Kitchen Decorating Tips for Renters

Staff Writer · Dec 16, 2009

Renters can be limited when it comes to kitchen decorating. If you go overboard you could risk losing your security deposit, and may even end up owing money. There are still some ways you can bring your kitchen to life without upsetting your landlord. Try these 6 decorating tips:

1. Store Appliances

Don’t crowd your counter tops with appliances. Put them away after using them, except for your coffee pot and microwave. A cluttered counter top will only shrink an already small space. Even large kitchens look better without the clutter. Organize your kitchen storage space in a such a way that you have room to store the appliances you usually leave out.

2. Decorate the Pantry

It can be easy to ignore the pantry when it comes to kitchen decorating. However, don’t miss the opportunity to improve your kitchen decor by decorating the pantry. Consider putting a wall clock on the door to the pantry, or on the wall in between shelves, for guests to see. An assortment of glass jars filed with colorful spices (even if you never use them) will give your kitchen a warm feel. You can buy Mason jars at any supermarket, and find other glass jars at department stores or yard sales.

3. Go White

An all-white kitchen is very popular in modern kitchen decorating, with one other color for dishes, pans, dish cloths and accessories. You may not be able to try this if your landlord won’t let you paint the apartment. However, if you are allowed to paint, you may enjoy this simple, yet elegant theme. Paint the walls, pantry, and anything else white, and then buy dishes, pots, pans and anything else you can get to match. For example, an all-white kitchen with a blue and white china dishes, blue mugs and even a blue kettle would give your small space a nice contemporary look.

4. Fresh Flowers

A simple kitchen decorating tip that all renters can do is buy fresh flowers. Unless you have allergies, you’ll welcome the look and smell in the kitchen. Buy a vase that will hold a large amount in case guests surprise you with a bundle. Pick flowers with colors that compliment the theme in your kitchen. Put them in the center of your kitchen table, or on the counter top if you don’t have a table in the kitchen.

5. Bowl of Fruit

Like fresh flowers, a bowl of fresh fruit can add vibrant color to what would otherwise be a dull-looking kitchen. Buy different fruits that are large in size and have bright colors, such as apples and pears. Find a large fruit bowl that has a solid primary color to put them in. If you can’t buy fresh fruits for some reason, you can buy fake fruit at an arts and crafts store.

You can still have a fantastic looking kitchen even if you’re renting a small apartment. Apply these simple kitchen decorating tips, and you’ll be on your way to creating a kitchen you’ll enjoy sharing with friends and family.
