5 Elements of a Great Tea Party

Staff Writer · Sep 30, 2010

Host a tea party in your apartment, the next time you’re thinking of ways to entertain guests. You can have a great tea party in a small space, because tea parties work great in an intimate environment. Once you understand the basic elements of a tea party, you’ll be able to have your own unique party that will create precious memories for all who attend.

1 -Tea Party Drinks

If you’re never attended a tea party before, you may have avoided it because you were expecting nothing but tea. Tea is the central drink served at a tea party, but it’s not the only one. You can offer a variety of drink options, along with the tea.

For example, lemonade is a good choice if you’re hosting a tea party during the summer, or if you want other options for children attending. As far as your tea, you can select one tea to serve everyone, or you can offer two or three selections in different tea pots. Even if you don’t plan to a variety, at least offer both caffeinated and decaffeinated teas, because some of your guests may have dietary or health issues.

2 – Tea Party Sandwiches

Most tea parties offer miniature sandwiches, but it’s a rule you can break if you choose. Typical tea party sandwiches include:

  • Chicken and cucumber sandwiches
  • Watercress and cream cheese sandwiches
  • Fruit filled sandwiches (pineapple, banana, apple)
  • Grilled cheese sandwiches

Plan your menu with your guests in mind. For example, a children’s tea party will have a different menu than an all moms tea party. Sandwiches may not be an option if you and your guests have food sensitives and must avoid gluten. There are some other foods you can try.

3 – Tea Party Foods

Think beyond sandwiches to make your tea party, one to remember. Any food that’s easy to prepare and can be presented in bite sized form will do. Consider these options:

  • Small meatballs with toothpicks
  • Rice flour cinnamon biscuits
  • Chicken-lettuce wraps
  • Cheese sandwiches (using cucumbers for “bread” slices)

Be creative with your selections, and tailor it to the needs of your guests.

4 – Tea Party Desserts

After the main food is served, and everyone has had a chance to eat, it’s time for dessert. You can choose just about anything you want, but try to choose desserts that you can eat with your hands. The running theme with many tea parties is using your hands to drink and eat. Don’t disrupt the theme by offering desserts that require a fork or spoon to eat it, like cheesecake. Some ideas for desserts are:

  • Tarts
  • Cupcakes
  • Tea biscuits
  • Cookies
  • Muffins
  • Chocolate candy
  • Scones

Keep it simple with desserts, so that you don’t blow your budget. A great tea party is element, yet simple.

5 – Tea Party Decorations

Your primary focus for decorations should be centerpieces for tables. Make your own, or buy some at arts and craft stores. Anything from flowers to fish bowls with shells or live fish will work. Choose a color theme for your tea party, and then find a centerpiece to match. Make it compliment the occasion.

Enjoy planning and preparing your tea party. When you incorporate these 5 elements, you can have a great tea party.
