You can make a pillow decorative and change the look of a room or spruce up old furniture. With so many creative ideas to choose from, you’re bound to find a few ideas that can work well for each room in your apartment. You can make decorative pillows yourself or find ones in retail stores that sell home decor items. Here are a few ideas to consider:

1 – Multi-Color Buttons

Adding multi-color buttons to your pillows is a simple project that you can do to change the look of your pillow instantly. The colors that work best are often colors that complement each other. For example, you can use pastel colors or primary colors. The thread that you use for each button should match the color of the button, so that the button gets all the attention. You can also buy pillows with multi-color buttons.

2 – Decorative Trim

You can add your own decorative trim or buy pillows with trim. Some of the popular trim options are:

  • Feathers
  • Ribbons
  • Tassel
  • Cloth flowers
  • Jewels
  • Fringe

Trim can be applied around the edge of the pillow, in the center of the pillow or in the corners. You will pay more for trimmed pillow if you’re buying pillows.

3 – Patterned Pillows

For a decorative pillow that really stands out, try a patterned pillows. There are all sorts of prints and designs available in various colors. The pillow with decorative patterns that are large in size can become its own decorative element in a bare room. Think of it as a piece of artwork. These pillows work great for a number of decorative styles, including contemporary, modern and vintage. A pillow with patterns may be too much to add to a room that has a wallpaper with patterns. You can find fabric with giant or small patterns and sew your own pillows.

4 – Stripes on Pillows

Horizontal or vertical stripes can give a pillow character. The stripes can cover the entire pillow or just certain sections. You can also select pillows with stripes that have one color, or stripes that are multi-colored. You’ll have to keep in mind the furniture you plan to use the pillows on to help you make your decision. For example, if your couch has stripes or other patterns, you may want to use little or no stripes on a decorative pillow. If it’s a plain couch, then multi-colored stripes on pillows may be what it needs to give it a fresh look.

5 – Multi-Colored Pillows

A decorative pillow with two or more colors is another way to make your furniture stand out. A popular design is to have one half of the pillow in one color and the other half in a complimentary color or a different shade of the same color. You can also have four different colors on the same pillow divided into quadrants.

If you lack sewing skills or don’t have time to make your own, you can find a pillow that is decorative and creative on the web or in local home decorating stores. You can also find some at thrift stores and consignment shops.
