4 Tips for Packing Lamps and Vases

Staff Writer · Jan 28, 2010

Your lamps and vases don’t have to arrive in broken pieces if you apply the right tips for packing them. There is a method to packing these fragile items, that is quite different from packing many of the other household items you’re moving. Professional movers get “big bucks” for using the following tips, that you can use as well. Here are 4 tips for packing lamps and vases like a pro:

1. Use Specialty Boxes

You might be able to get away with using one of your other moving boxes to pack your vases and smaller lamps, but you’ll likely need a tall box for standard sized lamps. You can purchase tall boxes from moving supplies stores. When you buy enough boxes for your lamps, you’ll want to reinforce both ends with sturdy packing tape, so that the lamps don’t fall out during the move or shipment.

A special box is not necessary for your vases, but you do need a bigger box that’s at least one-half bigger than the size of the vase. The extra room on the sides will help to protect the vase, along with extra padding (discussed in third tip).

2. Bubble Wrap

Use bubble wrap to protect lamps and vases. General tips for packing often include the use of bubble wrap, which may be optional. In the case of packing lamps and vases, it’s a necessity. Roll your lamps and vases individually in bubble wrap and seal the seams shut with packing tape. These items are so fragile, that other alternatives, such as blankets and towels, won’t work for this task. If money is tight, limit your use of bubble wrap to your lamps and vases, and use blankets and towels for less fragile items. Make sure that the top and bottom of each bubble wrap enclosure is sealed.

3. Newspaper

Don’t throw away old newspapers when you know you’re packing for a move. In this tip for packing lamps and vases, you’ll need as much of newspaper as you can find to fill the spaces in boxes. In the first tip, you were advised to leave extra space in your vase boxes. You’ll fill up those extra spaces with as much newspaper as you can, to provide padding for your vases. You’ll also do the same for extra spaces in your lamp boxes. Roll the newspaper into wads, and stuff them into the boxes. You want enough so that if the box is dropped, it can land on the newspaper without your lamps or vases breaking into pieces.

4. Identify as Fragile

Movers, shippers and delivers won’t know what’s in your boxes. It’s up to you to warn them, that they’re lifting and carrying fragile items. The way to do that is to label each box: “Fragile”. This is easy if you’re mailing your boxes. Ask the clerk to use the “fragile stamp” and mark it several times on each box. Otherwise, use a red marker and write it yourself.

When you use these 4 tips for packing your lamps and vases, you can be more assured that they’ll arrive without getting damaged. However, if you ignore these tips, they are more likely to get destroyed.
