4 Tips for an Awesome Apartment Star Wars Party

Staff Writer · Sep 30, 2010

Holding a Star Wars party in your apartment can be a great way to transport you and your friends to a galaxy far, far away for an evening or a day. When planning the party, try any of the following to make the gathering more memorable:

1. Planning the Event’s Focus

This may seem like a bizarre tip—there are only six Star Wars movies, and for some, perhaps there are only three Star Wars movies they truly enjoy—but you’ve got to plan ahead of time what the focus of your party will be. This includes figuring out how much time you’ll have together and to see if you have time to watch one, two, three or even six of the movies at the party, if you’re really devoted.

However, remember that Star Wars has an expansive extended universe, too. There are cartoons, video games, board games, card games and more—plenty of possible entertainment for your party. You can even focus on the Star Wars theme and not the entertainment itself, having a movie playing in the background while you lead the group in some trivia contests or video game tournaments. You can also ask everyone to dress up as their favorite Star Wars characters.

2. Fitting It All in Your Space

The trouble with planning too many events at your Star Wars party (like having an area for watching a Star Wars movie on top of an area for eating an an area for gaming, for example) is that you simply may not have the space. Think clearly about what you want to do ahead of time and designate space for each part of the party. Don’t forget to plan for adequate sitting space. You may find that moving unused furniture (such as a coffee table or even a kitchen table) out of the way during your party can help clear up some space.

3. Decorating in the Star Wars Theme

It won’t be a Star Wars party without Star Wars decorations. You can find plenty of Star Wars decorations at party supply stores, but it may be more focused on the latest addition to the franchise post-movies. If you don’t want to decorate with the cartoon versions of characters or you don’t want to spend too much money, focus on the “traveling through space theme,” getting streamers in black and silver colors to represent the stars in the galaxy. You can also print out pictures of your favorite characters and ships and hang them on the walls.

4. Food Fit for Star Wars

No one likes a party without adequate refreshments. In the corner you devote to food, you should have a variety of hors d’ouevres and snacks. If you bake cookies or cupcakes, decorate them or shape them in the shape of lightsabers, Darth Vader’s helmet, Yoda’s head or anything else iconic. As far as the bar goes, you can call is the Cantina from Mos Eisley and add food coloring to the drinks to make them bright greens and yellows like the drinks served at Star Wars bars.

If you and your friends enjoy your apartment Star Wars party, remember that there’s plenty in the Star Wars universe to explore. You can make holding a party celebrating Star Wars a monthly tradition.
