3 Placement Tips for Your Indoor Composting Bin

Staff Writer · Jul 7, 2011

An indoor composting bin is an excellent way to convert household waste such as food scraps and yard trimmings into compost, which can be used as potting soil for plants. Materials can be composted using a special type of indoor bin if you don’t have space for an outdoor compost pile. Here are three placement tips for your indoor bin:

1. The Basement

If you have a basement, it would be an excellent place to house your indoor composting bin. The location would keep the bin close at hand yet far enough away to avoid any unpleasant odors. The bin should always be covered to keep away pests and rodents, and to ensure that any foul odors don’t pervade the apartment.

2. Under the Kitchen Sink

Another excellent place to keep a small indoor composting bin is under the kitchen sink. The area under the kitchen sink is handy to dispose of kitchen organic wastes such as fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells and leftovers.

3. A Kitchen Cabinet

A kitchen cabinet is another good place for the composting bin, because it keeps it away from direct sunlight. This can heat the bin and speed up the composting process. Too much sunlight and heat can kill any worms present in the bin, because they’re photo-phobic and can’t survive at high temperatures. Since the worms are essential for the composting process, it’s best to ensure that they are not exposed to sunlight.

A composting bin should be close to the living areas of the apartment so that it’s easy to bring organic waste materials to it. However, it should be kept within a safe distance to preserve the beauty of the apartment and prevent odors from reaching the occupants.
